Thanksgiving Eve DUI Accidents | Thomson Law

November 21, 2017 by thomson

A relatively new cultural phenonmenom has sparked an increase in DUI related arrests and drunk driving related accidents and fatalities.  During the past decade, the Thanksgiving holiday beginning at 6pm Wednesday through 6am Monday morning has become synonomous with bar hoppng, over-indulging at holiday parties and late night binging.  Shopping centers open around the clock along with a large uptick in restaurant visits have all led to more people on the roadways and a greater chance of becoming a statistic in an alcohol related car accident.

The blitz social media campaign, “Make it to the table, Don’t Drink and Drive this Thanksgiving Eve” is being organized by the NHSTA and its affliates.  Officials are deeply concerned by the stark increase of  800 recorded DUI related deaths from the 2012-2016 Thanksgiving weekends.

It is impotant to remember this holiday season that a little pre-planning may save your life or the life of someone you love.  The NHSTA recommends that all individuals who plan to drink take the following precautions to avoid becoming another fatality on our roadways.

  1. Make a plan for a safe ride home before anyone takes the first drink.  Our decision making skills are impaired by alcohol consumption.  Make a plan with a sober mind.
  2. Use public transportation, cabs and buses offer safe rides home.
  3. Preprogram your phone with an emergency contact that can be called if you need a ride.
  4. Wear your seat belt and be vigilant.  If you see a drunk driver, report it by calling 911.

Spend this holiday with your friends and family in the safest way possible.  Enjoy having them close and of course, if you drink, don’t drive. Happy Thanksgiving!

If you or a loved has been injured or killed by a drunk driver, call Paul Thomson of The Thomson Law Firm for a FREE consultation.  (540) 777-4900 or (877) 471-3353.

Struck By Truck

Paul Thomson Obtains $21 Million Recovery for Catastrophically Injured Client. The client a German citizen, was catastrophically injured and confined to a bed and wheelchair for the rest of his life as a result of being struck by a bread truck while riding his bicycle in Pulaski County in October 2011. In December 2011, Paul’s client returned home to Germany and is now living in a medical facility that provides assistance to him for all aspects of his daily needs. Unfortunately, his client also lost his ability to communicate. Paul and the attorney who brought him in to assist on the case, are proud to announce that they settled the case for $21 million in July of this year. This money will be used to provide additional physical, occupational and speech therapies that the client needs, but is unable to pay for. This will also provide his family with a specialty van and wheelchair for the client, as well as providing additional medical care and testing that he needs, but could not pay for. This is believed to be one of the largest personal injury settlements ever in Virginia. View The Roanoke Times Article Here>>
